The light was unusually bright when I woke the next morning. I blinked several times, trying to adjust my scratchy eyes. One of the many baffling and annoying byproducts of perimenopause was dry eye. Which reminded me, I needed to make an appointment with the doctor. The over-the-counter eye drops weren’t cutting it anymore.

I smacked my lips a few times and turned my head. Freddie was gone, and it was… eleven a.m.?

“Crap,” I hissed.

The next several minutes were a flurry of showering, teeth brushing, and throwing on a simple cotton dress and sandals. I then staggered into the kitchen, to find an empty cat food bowl and Freddie, on the counter, snoozing next to the cookie jar.

He opened one eye, then closed it. I refilled his food dish and decided to grab coffee at Ice Ice Baby, a café downtown that specialized in iced drinks.

Feeling scattered as I gathered my notebook and other needed items for my day out, I stuffed pens, my phone, a charger, and my tablet. On impulse, I reached for the rock I’d purchased at the market. I’d placed it on an end table, and now that I recalled the events of last night, I remembered that it had taken on a certain glow while Eliza talked.

Couldn’t hurt to bring it along with me as a talisman of sorts. I shoved it into my pants pocket, then secured the door to my apartment and went into the inn’s lobby. Jimbo was behind the computer, whistling.

“Good mornin’, Miss Amelia.”

“Morning. How’s everything going here today? I confess I slept in.” I cleared my throat, a little embarrassed. I was always up at the crack of dawn, even when I didn’t have guests. “Normally I like to tackle the day with the early birds, but I, uh, had a long night with a ghost.”

Jimbo nodded slowly. “I’ve had a few of those myself. And all’s quiet here. Got a call from one of our guests coming this week. They’ve asked for the downstairs room with the accessible bathroom stall.”

“Okay, we can do that, right?”

That led me to thinking about my other long-term project: the renovation. There were several unused rooms downstairs, many chock full of my aunt’s stuff. I hadn’t even fully gone through everything. My plan was to turn a second room downstairs into something fully accessible.

“We sure can. Hey, are you headed downtown?”

“I am.”

“Amy the florist wants to show you a new style of bouquets she’s working on. Says it might be good for the lobby on weekends.”

“Oh, I’d love to see. Unless you’d rather go, being a plant shaman and all.”

He broke out into a toothy grin. “Naw, I’m better with living flora.”

“Okay, I’ll swing by. I’ve got a bunch of errands today.”

“Good deal. I’ll hold down the fort.” He gave me a little salute, which I returned.

Once in the car, I cranked the AC and waited for it to kick in while still parked in the driveway. Today was… Tuesday. Which meant Oliver didn’t have to be at school until later.
